In a study published by ACED, gardeners reported their net income from urban farming. After accounting for expenses and labor costs, the average gardener earned approximately XOF 154,115 (about $263) per harvest, with half earning around XOF 75,000 (about $128) or less. For many, urban agriculture serves as a supplementary income source, with 43% of gardeners engaged in other jobs such as motorbike taxi services or roles in carpentry, teaching or tailoring. Additionally, urban farming plays a role in community food security; 6% of gardeners provide produce as payment to workers, while 46% share their produce with friends and family at no cost.
In Sèmè-Kpodji, urban farming is reshaping the local economy. The area is home to about 300 small-scale farmers like Sylvie Sedagondji, who cultivate fruits and vegetables for both personal consumption and market sales. Due to the Helvetas program, Sedagondji and 110 other farmers have transitioned to organic farming. Helvetas, an independent Swiss development organization, supports these farmers by ensuring its produce reaches the market. It offers a purchase guarantee, where a truck collects excess produce and delivers it to five organic shops in Cotonou, ensuring a stable market for these farmers.
