“Having gardens is good for the environment,” Mark Haim, director of Mid-Missouri Peaceworks, said. “It’s also a good way to let people know how to be knowledgeable about pollution and about chemicals brought in food.”

Excerpt:

Columbia gardeners and plant fans were given the opportunity to explore and learn about urban gardens at five different locations as a part of the annual Edible Columbia Garden Tour on Sunday.

The event, held by Mid-Missouri Peaceworks, provided insights into what makes an urban garden successful and the many benefits that managing one can bring.

This year, many of the gardens emphasized the well-being of plants and soil, as well as how growing native plants can be useful for making gardens bloom.

“Anytime you see a dark blue, or purple, or blackish berry, those are really good for you,” said Melinda Hemmelgarn, who hosted visitors at her urban garden. “They are full of anti-oxidants.”

Each gardener provided a variety of tips, like ways to prevent animals from eating plants, for those who already have urban gardens as well as those looking to start their own. High fences are good to keep deer from getting into the garden, and raised beds also have benefits for keeping out pests without having to use harmful chemicals.
