Until now, the focus has been on preparing the soil, tending to the plants and sharing knowledge and experience with their team of youth employees.
The work has begun to pay off, as the fresh organic fruits and vegetables grown in the Sudbury soil are reaching harvest quality. The first crop of 2024 was a basket of zucchini.
“The crops have really shot up in the last couple of weeks, which has been great to see,” David Gagnon, youth mentor and agriculture assistant at the Flour Mill Community Farm, said in a release.
“We’re looking forward to getting these fruits and veggies ready for sale and sharing them with our community. It’s been a hot summer but totally worth it.”
To sell their produce, the Flour Mill Community Farm team is winding up for their first of many market booths this season. This booth will be hosted weekly on the farm site, at 736 Bruce Ave. in Ryan Heights.
Participants of the Flour Mill Community Farm Youth Employment Program will be facilitating the booth; this is a unique opportunity for them to give back to their community and gain essential work experience at the same time.
