Ed Morrison, the founder and director of Roots Allotments – which has its headquarters in Bristol – has a story that resonates with many of those who now tend their plot.
“I worked in advertising in London for seven years and got sick of it. I got depressed and was probably the lowest of my life and figured that I needed to make a change,” Ed said.
His turning point came during a talk by Charles Dowding, a horticulturist known for pioneering modern no-dig and organic soil management. Inspired by Dowding, Ed returned to his roots in Devon and started his journey into sustainable gardening.
“During the lockdown, I saw the queues at supermarkets, people fighting over toilet paper, and I just had this moment that this was a sign to take action,” Ed recounted. He started growing vegetables in his grandma’s garden and found a sense of purpose and connection. “When the world felt like it was collapsing, I felt like I was at my best mental health.”
After Covid, Ed moved back to London, in a second flood flat and yearned for somewhere to grow. “I looked at allotment waiting lists, and it was 28 years in Lambeth,” he said.
