The final meeting of the 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee is next week
The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, which was appointed by the Departments of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Agriculture (USDA) two years ago, will meet for the final time next week.
The final sessions are set for Monday, Oct. 21, and Tuesday, Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT on both days.
The 2025 Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee comprises 20 nationally recognized nutrition and public health experts. The committee is tasked with reviewing the current body of nutrition science on specific topics and questions and developing a scientific report that includes its independent, science-based advice for HHS and USDA to consider.
The Departments of HHS and USDA use the committee’s review and public comments on its scientific report and agency input to develop the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for 2025-2030.
Throughout the Committee’s term, members have collaborated during public and subcommittee meetings, developed evidence review protocols, reviewed and synthesized evidence, presented scientific findings, considered public comments, and developed and submitted scientific reports.
The 2025 Committee has examined the relationship between diet and health across all life stages. It will use a health equity lens across its evidence review to ensure factors such as socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and culture are described and considered to the greatest extent possible based on the information provided in the scientific literature and data.
This will help HHS and USDA ensure that the resulting guidance in the Dietary Guidelines is relevant to people with diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds. To aid in this process, the Committee members have substantial health equity expertise in human nutrition and experience conducting research with diverse populations.
At the final meeting, the committee will review and discuss the scientific findings and advice that will be included in its scientific report. Each subcommittee and working group will review and share its advice for committee discussion, and federal staff will discuss the next steps in developing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for 2025 to 2030.
With the final meeting, the committee will finalize and submit its scientific report to HHS and USDA. The departments will then post the report to DietaryGuidelines.gov along with all supplemental documents, including data analysis reports, food pattern modeling reports, and systematic reviews. A new comment period will open to collect input on the report from the public.
The departments will use this input to develop the next edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
