Newcomers from California to Oregon and metro Detroit natives alike have settled into disenfranchised neighborhoods, taking advantage of the land abundance to set up shop as urban homesteaders, and various small farms and organizations work to support their needs. Keep Growing Detroit, a local nonprofit aiming to make Detroit a more food-sovereign city, is revered for its ongoing support of the agricultural community, providing seeds, soil tests, gardening lessons and composting how-tos at low to no cost for growers.

Many of Detroit’s culinarians play a role in bolstering the city’s agricultural potential, as well.

For years, some of the best chefs and restaurant owners have leaned into the farm-to-table movement, sourcing produce from local farms whenever possible. Over the past year, they’ve taken it a step further by joining the fray to transform abandoned fields near their restaurants into farms that dual as pantry gardens.

In Chadsey Condon, where stretches of land bookend residential blocks, Ladder 4 sources tomatoes and radishes from a plot just across the street from the restaurant and former firehouse. Hio Farm in Core City provides strawberries and radicchio to its sister establishments Takoi and Spiedo, as well as other restaurants around town, and Café Prince, another Core City establishment, grows mint leaves for fresh tea at a nearby plot.
