Patient count in Listeria outbreak grows; investigation into E. coli outbreak closed
The Food and Drug Administration is continuing to investigate several outbreaks of foodborne illnesses and has closed its investigation into an E. coli O157:H7 outbreak.
For an outbreak of infections from Listeria monocytogenes, the agency reports that the patient count has increased to 37, up from 34 reported a week ago. The FDA first reported the outbreak on Dec. 26, 2024. The agency has not reported how old the patients are or where they live.
The FDA has begun traceback efforts, but has not reported what food is being traced. The agency has begun an onsite inspections and sample testing but has not reported what location is being inspected or what food or environmental samples are being tested.
For the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak that has ended, the FDA found that romaine lettuce was the source of the pathogen. The agency confirmed 89 patients in the outbreak. The FDA first posted information about the outbreak on Dec. 4, 2024.
On other news, The FDA continues to investigate an outbreak of Salmonella infections traced to frozen mini pastries. The agency has identified 18 patients across seven states. The outbreak is related to an outbreak in Canada that has sickened 69 people. The outbreak strain in the United States is the same that is making people ill in Canada.
The implicated mini pastries are sold under the Sweet Cream brand and manufactured in Italy. They were exported into the United States by Importations Piu Che Dolci Inc. of Quebec, Canada.
All Sweet Cream-brand mini pastry products with best by dates from June 17 through Nov. 15 are under recall. Some of the recalled pastries were delivered to restaurants.
The pastries may have been sold individually or in smaller packages, with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name, or best by date. Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the recalled products are advised to contact their retailer.
