Canada: Stone Road Mall rooftop garden in Guelph yields more than 2,000 pounds of produce
What began as a small sustainability project has blossomed into a thriving rooftop garden at Stone Road Mall

At Guelph’s Stone Road Mall, there is something unexpected on the top floor of its parkade – a rooftop garden.
The garden started in 2021 as a way for the mall to give back to the community. The vegetables produced are donated to The SEED, a not-for-profit food project providing locals with access to food.
To date, the rooftop garden has harvested more than 2,000 pounds of vegetables for The SEED. The produce is used for the organization’s grocery program in its free food section. Produce from the rooftop garden is also used for The SEED’s wholesale food and upcycled kitchen programs.
When it started, it had 10 garden beds, three rain barrels and one beehive. Now there are 20 garden beds, five rain barrels and up to five hives this year. For the last four years, it has collected 99 barrels of rainwater used to water the garden.
The garden grows Yukon gold potatoes, beets, tomatoes and lettuce.
“We get a lot of food that’s packaged or has longer shelf life at The SEED. So to get in fresh, locally grown stuff has been hugely valuable,” said Nicole Leighton, grocery and market coordinator at The SEED.
