On June 3, the second phase of the Urban Farming Lots and the new Urban Plaza were launched in Hulhumalé, marking another step in the partnership between UNDP Maldives, the Government of Japan, and Housing Development Corporation (HDC). These developments are part of the Project for Developing a Sustainable Agricultural Economy (PDSAE), which continues to open up practical space for community-driven food production in urban settings.
Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Mariyam Mariya, attended as Chief Guest, joining partners and farmers in recognizing how local, inclusive initiatives like this can contribute to long-term food security and resilience.
Twelve new plots were handed over, six allocated to women, three to youth and persons with disabilities, and three under a general category. The selection process wasn’t symbolic. It was intentional. Inclusion is not a side goal of the project. It’s central to how it’s built.
