William Abell, who moved to Sowebo just two weeks ago, did a double-take Tuesday morning when he saw two pigs walking along West Pratt Street.
11 News has learned the two pot-bellied pigs, Charlotte and Babe, belong to an urban farm that has goats, doves, pigs and horses.
“It’s kind of strange, seems like they should be on a farm. It’s alright,” Abell said.
It’s part of the arabber’s tradition to have the pigs and goats around, according to Gready Cornish with the urban farm.
“The urban horse farm consists of the arabbers, which produce fruit and vegetables throughout the city on horse-drawn cart,” Cornish said.
Cornish said the animals roam to the top and bottom of the alley, and they do not cross the streets. They use the doves for funerals and weddings, and they reach out to the schools to offer pony rides. It’s a place for anyone to come and learn about their animals for free.
“Learn to groom, learn anatomy,” Cornish said. “We cater to the neighborhood, don’t turn anybody away. We’re here for the community.”
