Salmonella illnesses prompt recall in Korea
Korean authorities have announced the recall of two products as part of an investigation into a foodborne outbreak.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, and local government officials said investigations into reports of food poisoning led to the action. They did not say how many people were sick.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said Salmonella was detected in “High Calcium Strawberry Cream Roll Cake” and “High Calcium Wheat Chocolate Banana Bread.”
Both products are manufactured by Mother Goose and were distributed by a firm whose name translates into English as Foodmus.
The 50-gram cake has a date of Oct. 12, 2025, while the affected date of the 22-gram bread is Sept. 21, 2025.
An investigation into the cause of food poisoning in North Chungcheong Province detected the same type of Salmonella Enteritidis in products and in patients who showed symptoms of suspected food poisoning.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety ordered a recall of the products and asked people who purchased the items to stop consuming them and return them to the place of purchase.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s Public Health Weekly Report, in 2023, 600 waterborne and foodborne outbreaks were reported with almost 12,700 people sick.
This data comes from the Summer Waterborne and Foodborne Infectious Disease Emergency Prevention System.
Most incidents occurred in restaurants followed by educational and childcare facilities.
The causative pathogen was norovirus in the majority of cases, followed by an unknown agent, and then Salmonella.
