Another pasta meal recall posted in relation to deadly Listeria outbreak

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Following a recall initiated by Nate’s Fine Foods of Roseville, CA, Demers Food Group has recalled select Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi with Linguini because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

The recall was initiated because these products contain a recalled linguini pasta ingredient supplied by Nate’s Fine Foods which was recalled for Listeria monocytogenes contamination and has been linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria infections.

This voluntary recall only applies to select Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi with Linguini and not to any other Scott & Jon’s products.

Pasta in several brands of meals — including Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Albertson’s and Kroger — have been recalled because they contain Nate’s Find Foods pasta that has been linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria infections.

As of Sept. 25, a total of 20 people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria had been reported from 15 states. Of 20 people with information available, 19 have been hospitalized and four deaths have been reported. There was one illness in a pregnant mother that resulted in a fetal loss.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled Scott & Jon’s Shrimp Scampi with Linguini should not consume it and should dispose of it or return the item to their local store for a full refund.

The FDA recommends in these cases that anyone who purchased or received any recalled products to use extra vigilance in cleaning and sanitizing any surfaces and containers that may have come in contact with these products to reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Listeria monocytogenes can survive in refrigerated temperatures and can easily spread to other foods and surfaces.

The product was distributed nationally to wholesale distributors and operators between Sept. 15 and Sept. 25.

There is concern that consumers may have the recalled meals in their freezers.

Consumers with questions should contact Demers Food Group’s Customer Service at 800-239-9731.

About Listeria infections
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look, smell or taste spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections. Anyone who has eaten any recalled products and developed symptoms of Listeria infection should seek medical treatment and tell their doctors about the possible Listeria exposure.

Also, anyone who has eaten any of the recalled products should monitor themselves for symptoms during the coming weeks because it can take up to 70 days after exposure to Listeria for symptoms of listeriosis to develop.

Symptoms of Listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache, and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose Listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Pregnant women, the elderly, young children, and people such as cancer patients who have weakened immune systems are particularly at risk of serious illnesses, life-threatening infections, other complications and death. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, their infections can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth.
