Kansas City students help combat food insecurity with urban farm
School administrators said students will gain valuable career experience through planning and building their learning farm.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — An empty field next to the DeLaSalle Education Center in Kansas City will be transformed into a learning farm that will benefit those in the surrounding community.
Students are the visionaries behind the project. They have plans to build chicken coops, garden beds, an outdoor eatery and more.
Making fresh, healthy foods more accessible to students and others in the neighborhood.
“There are a lot of people lacking food, and I think we can help with that,” said Santino Luna, a student involved with the learning farm project. “Especially at school, there aren’t many healthy options. We don’t want them to eat junk food all the time, and so we want to grow a lot of vegetables.”
A partnership between the behavioral and mental health nonprofit Cornerstones of Care and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City made the learning farm project possible.
Staffers with Cornerstones of Care’s vocational program, like Build Trybe, will work with students at DeLaSalle to transform the empty field into an urban farming area.
