In 2022, when she started building her new house in Kien Hung ward (Hanoi), Ms. Trang asked the construction team to carefully prepare the rooftop on the 5th floor to create her dream garden, fulfilling her passion for growing fruits and vegetables.
“I asked them to carefully waterproof the area, and then add a stand to elevate the buckets and pots about 30cm above the floor so that water wouldn’t accumulate when watering.”
“The irrigation and drainage systems were also designed to be integrated from the start, making garden care more convenient,” Trang explained.
She and her family mainly live on the second and third floors, so going up to the fifth floor to tend the vegetable garden isn’t too inconvenient. However, building the rooftop garden was quite difficult in the beginning, with the most challenging part being transporting the soil up to the upper floors.
She bought a 3-ton truckload of soil and hired people to transport it to the rooftop. The soil was initially clayey, with many large, hard chunks, so she spent a few more days breaking it up and improving the soil.
“This is, in my opinion, the most important step before planting vegetables, because only with loose, porous soil can plants grow healthily.”
“I improved the soil by mixing 5 parts soil, 3 parts vermicompost, and 2 parts rice husk to supplement nutrients and increase soil aeration,” Trang explained.
