Tractors in Brussels: The Massive Revolt That Is About to Paralyze the European Union (Video)
Hundreds of European farmers, led by Belgian and French, recently paralyzed Brussels with over 900-1,000 tractors, converging on EU institutions to protest against the proposed EU-Mercosur trade deal, excessive environmental regulation, and cheap, unfair agricultural imports. The protests involved spraying manure, throwing eggs, and creating massive traffic blockades near the European Council.
Farmers are protesting the EU-Mercosur trade deal (with South American nations), which they fear will flood the market with cheap, lower-standard beef and produce. Other complaints include the heavy administrative burden of environmental policies and reduced subsidies.
The demonstrations involved hundreds of tractors blocking major roads and the European quarter in Brussels during key EU summits. In addition to traffic disruption, farmers have burned tires and toppled objects in protest. Authorities in Brussels used tear gas and water cannons to manage the protests as demonstrators threw eggs, smoke bombs, and potatoes at the European Council building.
