Bernalillo County, New Mexico, Adopts Updated Urban Agriculture Master Plan

Last night, the Bernalillo County Board of Commissioners approved and adopted the 2026 Urban Agriculture Master Plan during its May 12 administrative meeting, continuing Bernalillo County’s investment in urban agriculture programming, community gardens, and green spaces in the International District.
Originally developed in 2019, the Urban Agriculture Plan was created to improve community health outcomes through gardening initiatives, educational programming, and neighborhood green spaces. Over the past five years, Bernalillo County Open Space has developed the Marble Open Space site, facilitated monthly community meetings, implemented urban agriculture outreach and education, initiated the Alleyway Activation Project, hosted youth conservation corps, and managed a permaculture grant.
The updated plan reflects changing community needs identified through public engagement and focused interviews conducted during the planning process. Residents emphasized the need for more consistent programming, culturally diverse workshops, technical assistance related to irrigation and soil health, and increased access to gardening resources such as seeds, tools, and educational materials.
The 2026 Master Plan recommends hiring dedicated urban agriculture staff, strengthening partnerships for education and resource sharing enhancing outreach and community engagement, and continuing investments in open spaces as sites for learning about urban agriculture. The plan also prioritizes maintaining and improving existing urban agriculture sites before expanding to new locations.
The motion passed on a 4 to 0 vote.
