America’s urban growers are ready to scale up, but an infrastructure gap is holding them back, according to new survey data from AGCO Parts.
The research, based on survey responses from over 1,000 Americans who have grown food or raised animals in the past year, finds that while hand tools are widespread among urban growers (84% ownership), appetite for more advanced equipment outpaces access to it. Six in 10 (64%) respondents want greenhouses or growing structures, yet only 18% currently have one. Interest in soil testing and monitoring tech is similarly high (57%), while just 12% currently use it. Irrigation shows the same pattern — 53% want small-scale systems, but only 17% have adopted them.
Generational data shows Millennials are leading the push for this next tier of equipment: 68% want greenhouses, and 62% want soil monitoring tools, more than any other generation, pointing to affordability and access as the main barriers to scaling up.
The demand isn’t just about tools; it’s about increasing opportunities for local farming initiatives. A majority of Americans (58%) support turning vacant lots and brownfield sites into urban farms, a view that’s strongest in North Carolina (81%), Colorado (73%) and California (68%). Women are more supportive than men of both repurposing vacant lots (60% vs. 53%) and converting rooftops into shared growing space (41% vs. 35%).
The AGCO Parts research involved a survey of 1,000+ American adults across 25 states who, in the past year, have grown food, raised animals, or engaged in related home food-production activities. Responses were collected and analyzed in July 2026.
