The UW Farm is a 2.5-acre student-powered urban farm, living laboratory and educational facility. Its crops range from zinnias to zucchini, Acworth says, while demonstrating how to garden organically on compromised urban ground. She says its methods scale to a backyard, P-Patch plot or rooftop container.
“What we do affects quite a few people,” says Acworth, “so it’s helpful, especially in an urban setting, to consider how what you do or don’t do would affect your neighbors.”
Soil testing helps home gardeners add only what’s needed, preventing harmful amendments from leaching into groundwater. The King Conservation District (kingcd.org) offers free soil testing, including a walk-in series for lead and arsenic — legacies of the Tacoma smelter plume and fruit orchards.
Mulching conserves soil moisture and cuts water bills, Acworth says. To prevent microplastics in soil and runoff, the farm uses weed fabric removed each fall, along with organic sisal, jute and cotton in place of plastic twine for trellising.
