The Mayor’s Office of Urban Agriculture has been working to reimagine the landscape of agriculture education since its establishment.
In an era of large food corporations, the office aims to connect students to the grounding practice of growing and enjoying fresh, locally grown and culturally relevant food.
To make this a tangible experience for children across New York City, the office has worked to build school gardens enabling hands-on growing experience — including harvesting — and tastings of fresh produce.
Along with these tastings, the office has helped facilitate urban farm visits and on-site culturally relevant fresh food cooking demonstrations that make healthy meals exciting for students.
The office aims to continue to develop and advance urban agriculture education and coordinate city agencies to scale the Farm to School program so that New York City public school students can benefit more equitably from locally grown, climate-smart, fresh food.
In the next two years, the Mayor’s Office of Urban Agriculture plans to scale up the initiative to 30 public schools citywide with the goal of reaching over a thousand New York City school children, teachers and parents.
