A 30-year-old community garden will soon have to pull up its stakes and move as Toronto prepares to transform a piece of city-owned land into an eight-storey supportive housing project.
Garrison Flats Community Garden, which was established in 1997, sits on city land, nestled between the South Stanley Extension Park and a shuttered former stable known as the Maple Green building on Wellington Street W.
“It’s just a cornerstone of peace and relaxation, and in today’s city, there’s not a lot of that,” said community organizer Sandy Douglas.
Douglas and other gardeners learned recently that they have less time left with their plots than previously thought as the city moves to expedite the demolition of the Maple Green building after its roof partially collapsed in late August.
Originally promised they could continue to use the garden until 2027, Garrison Flats gardeners say they were told in an e-mail from the city in early September that a demolition plan was being put together, and that city staff would create opportunities for gardeners to remove their “tools, gardening equipment, and other belongings.”
