Between 1.6 and 2.75 million Cubans—up to 25 percent of the island’s total population—have left the country since 2020. This wave of migration has severely depleted the domestic labor force, left public services and healthcare struggling, and accelerated a severe population aging crisis with record-low birth rates. Cubans have fled through diverse paths, including routes via Nicaragua, the Darién Gap, U.S. humanitarian parole programs, and alternative relocations to Spain and Latin America. 

The current crisis in Cuba is said to be caused by many things hitting the economy. Post-pandemic tourism slumps, tight U.S. sanctions, severe chronic fuel shortages, and rolling blackouts have paralyzed daily life. Streets and neighborhoods across the island feature widespread empty spaces, abandoned buildings, and deepening poverty, leading many citizens to view the foundational promises of the revolution as broken. Discussions online and among observers frequently describe the island as a “deserted revolution” where younger generations see no viable future.

Relations between the United States and Cuba have reached an intense new phase of escalation and public confrontation under President Donald Trump’s administration. Driven by an aggressive campaign targeting regime change, the administration has implemented a strict fuel blockade, ratcheted up economic sanctions, and even explicitly floated the possibility of military intervention on the island. The evolving situation is defined by severe domestic impacts on the island and direct geopolitical standoffs. 

Initiated in January 2026, a strict U.S. fuel blockade has targeted oil shipments to Cuba from major partners like Venezuela and Mexico. This has triggered catastrophic failures of the Cuban national power grid, causing widespread blackouts lasting up to 22 hours a day and cutting off basic services like water and internet. The economic pressure intensified after President Trump announced that the U.S. would impose secondary tariffs on any nation providing or selling oil to the island. Following an intense shouting match at the United Nations General Assembly between U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuba’s foreign minister, the Trump administration officially ejected a high-ranking Cuban diplomat from the U.S.

During a Florida campaign rally, President Trump stated that U.S. warships returning from the Middle East would “take care of Cuba” on their way back. He suggested that a warship would stop off the Cuban coast to force a capitulation. Trump noted that after a show of naval force, he would “send Marco Rubio in to finish up the deal”. Secretary of State Marco Rubio immediately followed up by publicly urging Cubans seeking change to partner discretely with the CIA. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla formally rejected these statements, asserting that Cuba’s people are ready to defend their sovereignty against U.S. interventionist ambitions. 

The United Nations General Assembly held its annual vote strongly condemning the decades-long U.S. economic embargo against Cuba. While the motion passed with overwhelming global support, the Trump administration successfully pressured several allied nations to sit out or abstain from the vote to show solidarity with Washington’s tightened stance.
