Silver Producer Approaches Operational Milestones as Mine Expansion Advances
Sierra Madre Gold and Silver Ltd. (SM:TSX.V; SMDRF:OTCQX) is approaching operational developments at its La Guitarra silver and gold mine in Mexico, with higher-grade production from the San Raphael blocks targeted for the end of October, a new ball mill scheduled for commissioning in November, and processing throughput already more than 40% above the operation’s previous capacity.
The changes form part of the company’s expansion program, which includes increasing the volume of material processed and accessing higher-grade mineralization as it works toward its Phase 2 production targets.
Silver has retreated from its 2026 highs, placing renewed attention on production costs. According to Sierra Madre’s second-quarter financial results, the company realized an average silver price of US$75.65 per ounce during Q2 2026, while its all-in sustaining cash cost was US$54.73 per silver-equivalent ounce produced, compared with US$32.54 in the same period of 2025. Cash costs were US$49.28 per silver-equivalent ounce produced, up from US$26.89 a year earlier. The figures provide a baseline for evaluating operating costs as La Guitarra’s expansion progresses.
Processing Throughput Climbs More Than 40% to 720 Tonnes Per Day
Sierra Madre reported that processing throughput at La Guitarra reached up to a steady 720 tonnes per day, representing an increase of more than 40% from the operation’s previous nameplate capacity of 500 tonnes per day.
The increase followed modifications to the existing crushing and milling circuits under the company’s Phase 1 expansion program.
Processing larger volumes can spread fixed operating costs across more tonnes of material, although the effect on Sierra Madre’s cost per ounce will also depend on production volumes and other operating factors.
Additional processing improvements identified in the company’s October corporate presentation included a second crushing circuit and increased conveyor capacity.
Higher-Grade San Raphael Mineralization Targeted for Late October
Sierra Madre’s second operational development involves accessing higher-grade mineralization at the San Raphael I and II blocks within the La Guitarra mine complex.
The company accelerated development and dewatering activities in these areas, including purchasing additional pumps. Its mine plan called for initial production from higher-grade blocks by the end of October 2026.
Higher-grade material contains more recoverable metal per tonne, assuming comparable recovery rates. The effect on Sierra Madre’s reported unit costs will depend on the grades, recoveries, and production volumes achieved.
Underground development has also accelerated across the Guitarra, Nazareno, and Coloso mining areas. Approximately 2.6 kilometers of development drives have been completed since June 2026, supporting the company’s efforts to provide additional feed to the expanded processing plant.
Development work has included the Los Angeles deposit and additional access to mining areas.
The importance of higher-grade material was also addressed by VSA Capital analyst Oliver O’Donnell, CFA, in his September 29 report.
“Whilst the production capacity increases represent a significant milestone, the development work to access higher-grade mineralization is also a vital factor in our forecasted production increases,” the report stated.
New Ball Mill Approaches November Commissioning as Phase 2 Advances
The third development involves the installation and commissioning of a new 11-by-12 ball mill at La Guitarra.
Sierra Madre reported that the mill had been installed, with commissioning expected in November 2026. The equipment is intended to operate alongside the existing mills as part of the company’s processing expansion.
“We continue to advance our Phase 1 and Phase 2 expansions at Guitarra,” Chief Operating Officer and Executive Chairman Greg Liller said.
The new mill has a stated capacity of 900 tonnes per day. Combined with the existing milling equipment, it is expected to support Sierra Madre’s Phase 2 processing target of 1,200 to 1,500 tonnes per day.
VSA Capital analyst Oliver O’Donnell reiterated his Buy recommendation and CA$2.70 per share price target.
The company indicated that the associated milling capacity could be achieved more than eight months ahead of schedule.
The broader Phase 2 expansion remains targeted for the third quarter of 2027.
Increasing milling capacity would allow the operation to process additional material, provided sufficient mine feed is available. The relationship between higher processing volumes and reported unit costs will become clearer as the company releases subsequent operating results.
Sierra Madre has also undertaken groundwork for a permitted dry-stack tailings facility with more than 5 million tonnes of potential capacity. Its October corporate presentation outlined a permitted facility with 5.8 million tonnes of capacity.
The tailings development forms another component of the broader Phase 2 expansion program.
Financial Position Includes US$22.2 Million in Cash and Loan Repayment
Sierra Madre entered the second half of 2026 following several financial developments.
The company completed a CA$57.5 million financing in January 2026 and repaid a US$5 million loan from First Majestic Silver Corp. (AG:TSX; AG:NYSE; FMV:FSE) in July.
According to its second-quarter financial results, Sierra Madre ended June with US$22.2 million in cash and US$25 million in working capital.
The financial results also reported US$8.23 million in net revenue and US$1.58 million in gross profit from La Guitarra during the second quarter.
The financing, cash position, and repayment of the First Majestic loan accompanied the company’s ongoing investment in underground development, milling equipment, and processing infrastructure.
Silver Prices Slide to Lowest Level Since November 2025
Silver prices declined to approximately US$52.32 per ounce on October 29, 2026, falling 3.01% on the day and 13.24% over the past month, according to Trading Economics. The metal reached its lowest level since November 2025, although prices remained 7.04% higher year over year.
The decline followed fresh U.S. economic data showing that the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index increased 0.5% in September, its largest monthly gain since March, while annual inflation accelerated to 3.6%. Core PCE inflation reached 3.1% year over year. Meanwhile, U.S. GDP expanded at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the third quarter, exceeding expectations of 3.2%.
The Federal Reserve held interest rates steady on October 28, while markets priced in approximately an 80% probability of a December rate increase, according to the CME FedWatch Tool. Expectations of higher interest rates added pressure to non-yielding precious metals, including silver.
Silver serves both industrial and investment markets, with applications in electronics, solar panels, and medical technologies. Mexico ranks among the world’s largest silver producers, alongside Peru and China.
Third Parties Assess Production Growth and Expansion Schedule
In a September 14 report, Thibaut Lepouttre of Caesars Report estimated that production could eventually reach approximately 800,000 ounces of silver and 12,000 ounces of gold, equivalent to roughly 1.5 million silver-equivalent ounces using a 60:1 ratio.
Lepouttre also discussed the relationship between the new mill and the company’s longer-term expansion plans.
“It does feel like the Phase I expansion is being completed with Phase II in mind,” he wrote.
In a September 29 VSA Morning Miner report, VSA Capital analyst Oliver O’Donnell, CFA, reiterated his Buy recommendation and CA$2.70 per share price target for Sierra Madre.
O’Donnell cited continued progress at La Guitarra, including increased processing throughput, accelerated underground development, access to higher-grade material, and progress on the permitted tailings expansion.
VSA forecast production of 440,000 ounces of silver and 4,400 ounces of gold in 2026, increasing to more than 1.3 million ounces of silver and approximately 12,000 ounces of gold following completion of Phase 2.
“The share price has eased back to the lower end of the recent trading range, however, and we believe that as development progress translates to stronger earnings performance, this will provide a catalyst for rerating,” the report stated.
Later commentary from Dominic Frisby of The Flying Frisby also addressed Sierra Madre’s expansion activities.
In an October 16, 2025, commentary titled “Silver’s Breakout and Sierra Madre’s Perfect Timing,” Frisby identified Sierra Madre as his “favorite silver play” and “largest silver position.”
Following a meeting with CEO Alex Langer, Frisby wrote, “The company is on a really good trajectory: expanding at just the right time.” Frisby also cautioned about silver’s volatility, noting that the metal remained vulnerable to sharp corrections.
Strategic entities hold about 23.90% of Sierra Madre, institutions hold about 22.10%, and Management and insiders own approximately 5.36%, with retail investors accounting for the balance.
The largest disclosed holder is First Majestic Silver Corp. at about 23.90%.
The company has roughly 261.25 million shares outstanding and a market capitalization of about CA$337 million.
