Summer is here, and it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the amazing weather, according to fitness expert Eugene Pallisco.

The great weather provides an environment that’s perfect for all different kinds of workouts.

Below are great ways to take advantage of the summer for your workout routine, as well as some other things to consider before doing so.

Different Types of Summer Workouts

There are a ton of fun activities near or in the water to enjoy during the summer. Swimming is a cooling, full-body workout that enhances cardiovascular fitness, builds muscle strength, and improves flexibility. It’s gentle on the joints, making it perfect for all fitness levels. Beach volleyball combines cardio, strength, and agility with the added challenge of playing on sand, which improves coordination and reflexes. Stand-up paddleboarding blends balance, strength, and endurance training, targeting your core, arms, legs, and back while providing a relaxing yet challenging workout on the water. Kayaking and canoeing strengthen the upper body and improve cardiovascular health, offering a full-body workout and a peaceful way to enjoy nature.

If you aren’t near the water, you can head out to the mountains or trails instead. Hiking combines cardio with the enjoyment of nature, strengthening your lower body, improving balance, and offering a mental escape. It can be leisurely or challenging and is a fun social activity. Cycling is versatile, providing a solid cardiovascular workout, strengthening legs, and improving joint mobility, whether done solo or in groups, on roads or trails, at varying intensities. Outdoor yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and mental clarity, helping you connect with nature.

There are also some current trendy fitness activities you can participate in. Pickleball combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, improving agility, coordination, and cardiovascular health. It’s easy to learn and suits all ages and fitness levels. Boot camp workouts mix cardio, strength training, and intervals in high-intensity sessions, building strength, endurance, and teamwork. Many parks and community centers offer outdoor fitness classes like Zumba and strength training, providing social and motivating environments.

Incorporating a variety of these summer workouts keeps you engaged, motivated, and fit throughout the season. Embrace the warm weather and explore new ways to stay active and healthy.

Important Summer Safety Reminders

One thing you need to pay attention to for summer workouts is the temperature, humidity, and heat index. Summers are becoming increasingly hotter around the world, and it is actually dangerous to be outside in some regions.

When the weather gets uncomfortably hot in the summer, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t work out. It just means that you should be smart about when you do so. With the days being lighter for longer, you can work out earlier in the morning or later in the evening when the sun isn’t so intense.

Even in those off-peak hours, you still need to be careful when working out during the summer. To keep cool, try water-based exercises such as the ones described above and/or work out in the shade when possible.

Eugene Pallisco said there are some other things to consider to stay safe during the summer.

Hydration is always important whenever you work out, but it can be extra challenging to stay hydrated during the summer when your body is always losing water. Make sure that you’re drinking enough water and replacing electrolytes as well.

In addition, don’t forget about protecting yourself from the sun. Before workouts, apply sunscreen with sufficient SPF that’s water/sweat resistant and wait 15 minutes before going out in the sun. Wear a hat and sunglasses as well to protect your head and your eyes from the blaring sun.

By taking these precautions, you can take advantage of all that summer has to offer while you stay healthy.
