Coffee Health Risks Much Higher Than Benefit

Industries like pharma or coffee pay for research that may be deceiving as the graphic of Yahoo News suggests (above).  Let’s look at the graph numbers…

  1. Preventing Alzheimers can be due to less cases reported later because they die of other causes before they get to the age for Alzheimers.
  2. Increased Anxiety: Yes, I wish I had $10 for every coffee drinker wanting another drug for their nerves.
  3. Boost Alertness: This is true, especially if one is driving distances at night.
  4. Protects the Heart: This is a Lie: It is not allowed in Coronary Care Units because it lowers the threshold for Ventricular Fibrillation that’s fatal in minutes if a person has a heart attack. It also causes skipped beats.
  5. Increased Heartbeats: Resting Heart rates are considered normal up to 100 but 60 is much better because the quality of the heartbeat is stronger with more time to rest and fill between beats.
  6. Causes Heartburn: YES. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant to gastric acid, causing gastritis, ulcers and GERD- GastroEsophagealReflux Disease, conditions that pharma like to sell acid blocker$ and antacids.
  7. Helps Maintain Muscle Mass: Possibly by causing dehydration (less fluid, more mass)
  8. Increases Need to Pass Urine: True, it acts like a diuretic, causing more dehydration than we get with the cup, and the need to urinate at night is not what we want either.
  9. Improves Mental Health: That is an illusion because of addiction and the relief it brings when low caffeine levels trigger withdrawal symptoms and craving for coffee. Ivan Pavlov called coffee ‘Bad Habit Glue.’ It glues bad habits together. It’s almost impossible to quit smoking if one drinks coffee. It stimulates nerves, so nicotine from a cigarette is needed to depress the nerves. Similar for addiction to alcohol, it calls for a drink.
  10. Dampens sleep quality. Coffee makes good sleep difficult to get. Patients ask for something to help sleep and deeper addictions develop.
  11. Worsens some headaches but improves others. True because caffeine withdrawal causes headaches and a cup of coffee relieves the headache, or take Anacin (aspirin + caffeine) or Excedrin (Tylenol + caffeine) to cure it, but then the addiction continues, and prescription drugs for headache often include caffeine.
  12. Raises cholesterol, so how do they say it’s good for the heart? A small benefit for antioxidants is a minor aid.
  13. Reduces Type 2 Diabetic Risk. There are better ways to avoid diabetes without harmful effects, such as reducing alcohol, fat, oil, and sugar intake. Avoiding those helps with weight loss, which is an important factor for people with diabetes.
  14. Helps with Weight Management: Not really. Loss of appetite can be due to stomach trouble (#6 above) and to the hot fluid taken with meals, but a cup of hot water 10-20 minutes before meals can help digestion and support weight loss. Squeezing a little lemon in it adds benefits.
  15. Boasts gut diversity, true, but not huge compared to all the negatives of coffee listed above and more below.
  16. Lower risk of cancer. Big lie. A leading medical journal reports a strong association of coffee to cancer of the pancreas in their lead article, https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJM198103123041102

A Harvard Health Letter reported an increased cancer of bladder in women who drank 2+ cups/day

  1. Chromosomal damage with cleft palate and hare lip in babies to women drinking coffee in 1st trimester.
  2. Breast Lumps—Fibrocystic Disease is the most common reason for breast surgery to be sure a lump is not cancer, and it’s caused by coffee, or in my daughter’s case, drinking Cokes to stay awake on the night shift as an RN, but her lumps went away when she quit the caffeine (drug).
  3. I volunteered on a flight paging any MD on board for a young man who couldn’t breathe. His lungs sounded clear, not wheezing or fluid sounds. Then I thought of caffeine. As a respiratory stimulant, it can cause hyperventilation and chest muscles to tighten as a body mechanism, so I asked if he was drinking any Cokes. Yes—they’re free, drinking a lot of them, he said!
  4. Osteoporosis in women who drink coffee—more coffee, worse thinning of bones.

If readers drink coffee regularly, it’s likely they have one or more problems. Why wait for cancer (#16) or a heart condition, etc? Most coffee addicts can break the habit by taking a Tylenol for withdrawal headache and drink a cup of water with a charcoal tablet or capsule to adsorb caffeine and speed withdrawal. Do not taper—quit “cold turkey” and tobacco at the same time (easier to quit together than separately).  Do it for five days, and most people are over the hump and can quit successfully. Stall off the urge to smoke or have some coffee—the urge will pass, and you can be free in a week. Don’t go back. The next cup or cigarette gets the whole habit back. We need a NEW START for a New Year.

 Pure air and water is important and rest is a key to restoration, not only at night, but to injured body parts needing immobilization, as with tape or stitches for cuts, a cast for broken bones, or bed rest after a heart attack, etc. Let’s trust God and nature while avoiding the deceptions of industries like pharma with adverse reactions as a leading cause of illness, disability, and death reported in med. journals, but never by CDC in business with pharma.
