CDG Chismes: Assassination of a FGR Delegate

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

For multiple reasons I haven’t taken the time to post anything for the past four months during which there has been very little to report with regards to the various factions of the Cártel del Golfo (CDG, Gulf Cartel), primarily due to the various CDG factions reaching a ceasefire earlier in the year, allegedly backed by the Tamaulipas government. Since then the main news has been fighting between the Los Metros Faction and the Cártel del Noreste (CDN), mostly in Nuevo León, but even that has gotten to the point of nothing noteworthy. However, things literally exploded in Reynosa last night…

The Attack

As reported by El Mañana and La Jornada, shortly after 7:00 PM a black Cadillac SUV driven by Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna was attacked while traveling on Miguel Hidalgo Boulevard which doubles as the main highway 40 connecting Reynosa to Monterrey. The attackers threw a grenade under the SUV which started a fire and Ernesto Vázquez exited the vehicle. Immediately thereafter he dropped to the ground and a white SUV pulled up and fired multiple gunshots at him, leaving him dead. As his vehicle burst into flames a civilian pulled his body away from the vehicle and cartel forces mounted multiple roadblocks across the city.

Since then the main news has been fighting between the Los Metros Faction and the Cártel del Noreste (CDN), mostly in Nuevo León, but even that has gotten to the point of nothing noteworthy. However, things literally exploded in Reynosa last night…

The FGR Delegate

There’s not a lot of information being reported about the career of Ernesto Cuitláhuac Vázquez Reyna so we have to do some digging. He earned his law degree in 1989 from the Valle del Bravo University in Tamaulipas. By the year 2000 he was a member of law enforcement in Chiapas, where he would face allegations of illegal arrests.

Ernesto Vázquez was referenced in late April 2019 as the representative (delegado) for the state of Tamaulipas for the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR, Attorney General’s Office), a role that he continued to serve in up to his death. It would seem that Ernesto Vázquez became a player in Tamaulipas law enforcement around the time that Armando Daniel “El Choco” León García, Jesús Iván “El Boludo” Castellanos Alanís, César “El Primito” Morfín Morfín, and Zenón Guadalupe “El Pezón” Ruiz Ortegón declared themselves the new “jefes” of Camargo and Reynosa, that is to say leaders of Los Metros, although “El Primito” seized sole leadership by the end of August 2019.

Allegations of corruption began to surface online by March 2023, with it insinuated that dealing with “El Mofles” made Ernesto Vázquez able to afford his luxurious house and it should be noted that this was shortly after the arrest of Ernesto “La Mierda” Sanchez Rivera. In November 2023 it was alleged that he was protecting a high ranking member of the Matamoros Faction, José Alberto “La Kena” García Vilano, from being arrested. Claims were made in May 2024 that FGR agent Jaime Quiroga Urbina did the dirty work for Ernesto Vázquez and was directly involved in Ulises “La Fayuka” Raga Ortiz, a ranking member of Los Metros, being released from prison after being arrested in October 2023.

Motive for Murder

Assuming the rumors are correct Ernesto Vázquez is just another Mexican government official that makes money from looking the other way and ignoring certain cartel members, in particular Los Metros, so why would one want him murdered?

There’s a notable storyline that I almost covered as part of this series that took place in late May 2025, when four musicians from Grupo Fugitivo and their manager were killed in Reynosa. Nine alleged participants in that murder were initially arrested but after rumbling that the real killers were still free “El Jimmi”, also known as “Metro 47,” and later “El Fayuka” were arrested for having ordered the killings, with one version of events stating that a member of the musical group was romantically involved with a woman that “El Fayuka” was in a relationship with. Could any of this have played a part in wanting Ernesto Vázquez murdered?

A more recent event would seem like a more logical explanation. In late July the FGR mounted a major operation in the La Escondida section of Reynosa, seizing over 475 gallons of stolen fuel, nine tractor trailers, 12 bobtail trucks, and 39 frac tanks.

Responsible Parties

So far there hasn’t been rumblings of any notable individuals being directly involved in the murder of Ernesto Vázquez but as long as one disregards it being staged by the Matamoros Faction in order to “heat up” the Reynosa plaza, Los Metros would be the ones responsible. Does that mean that “El Primito” is ultimately responsible? Not so fast.

In my opinion one of the biggest mistakes made in cartel reporting is to paint a picture of organizations led by sole individuals whom everyone else reports to; reality isn’t quite that simple. There may be room for argument but from my perspective “El Primito” isn’t quite the “leader of Los Metros” as he is painted out to be, with his organizational structure primarily in the cities and towns west of Reynosa. When it comes to Reynosa itself Carlos Humberto “El Mono” Acuña De Los Santos has been in charge since early 2018. Although “El Primito” and “El Mono” appear to be strongly aligned there have been occasional rumors of tension, enough that one party killing a government official due to a dispute would not be all that surprising.

Another line to consider is the brother of “La Mierda”, Héctor “La Mimi” Sánchez Rivera. Former underlings of high ranking Los Metros member “El Chiricuas”, both these individuals have continued to operate in Reynosa despite conflicts with core Los Metros members. In fact there is another version of events regarding the killing of members of Grupo Fugitivo that states that they had been hired to play at an event by “La Mimi” and “El Fayuka” had them killed for doing so without his permission; ultimately “El Fayuka” was turned in so as to prevent war from breaking out between the underlings of “La Mimi” and “El Fayuka”.

Nevertheless, there is one possible sign as to who may be involved in the killing. Early this morning it was reported that “Comandante M49” and his armed underlings were spotted fleeing rapidly in vehicles. Also known as “El Snoopy”, Metro 49 has his own corrido by Golpe de Guerra from June 2023 and was mentioned in September 2024 among the high level targets that the military should seek in Reynosa. Coincidence or are authorities looking to arrest him?
