The Trump administration has deployed approximately 3,000 federal agents (primarily ICE and CBP, not “Marines”) to the Twin Cities. This is described by the DHS as the largest immigration enforcement operation in history. The State of Minnesota and the City of Chicago have sued the Trump administration, labeling the surge an unconstitutional “federal invasion” and alleging racial profiling.
Rep. Omar has called the federal tactics “state violence” and “reprehensible,” and she was recently escorted out of a regional ICE headquarters during an attempted oversight visit. President Trump has responded by warning of a “day of reckoning and retribution” for Minnesota Democrats.
Omar joined thousands of protesters to rally against the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent. She led protesters through Minneapolis streets in the back of a pickup truck, telling the crowd, “we are going to make sure that these people pay for what they have done to us”.
Conservative critics have accused her of “inciting violence” due to her rhetoric during these protests, specifically her promise that those responsible “will pay”. Omar maintains that her actions are a necessary part of her constitutional responsibility to conduct oversight of detention facilities.
