Engineering, Sanitation Workers Join Statewide Stir, Suspend Strike Temporarily

Proddatur – Andhra Pradesh: Municipal engineering and public health workers, who joined the indefinite statewide strike called by CITU, temporarily called off their protest after assurances from state leaders, while warning of intensified action if demands are unmet by August 4.

Strike over wage disparities and unfair categorization

Hundreds of public health and engineering workers boycotted duties on Tuesday in support of their demand for fair wages and unified treatment across departments. CITU District Secretary Manohar, speaking at the protest, criticized the government’s distinction between sanitation and engineering workers, calling it unjust and demoralizing.

During the protest, workers paid homage to VS Achuthanandan, the late former Chief Minister of Kerala and one of the founding leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), acknowledging his contributions to labor rights and social justice.

Temporary suspension of strike after meeting

A meeting held at 5 pm in the Municipal Engineer’s chamber concluded with the decision to temporarily suspend the strike. Municipal officials, union leaders, and workers agreed that duties would resume on Wednesday. However, they emphasized that the strike is only paused, not withdrawn.

Warning of fresh agitation from August 5

The union clarified that if the remaining demands are not fulfilled by August 4, a fresh program of intensified agitation will be launched from August 5, in coordination with state-level CITU leadership. Workers are willing to fight until justice is served.

The unified stand by municipal workers indicates rising discontent in grassroots urban services and underscores the urgency for the government to respond with concrete measures.
