• Poppy Flowers (and Seeds) are Symbols of Remembrance: The most widely recognized symbolism of poppies comes from their association with remembrance of soldiers who died in wartime, particularly during World War 1. This symbolism arose after the publication of the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae in 1915. The poem describes how poppies grew amidst the graves of fallen soldiers in Flanders, a region of Belgium heavily impacted by the war.

  The specific verse from the poem reads:

  “In Flanders fields the poppies blow
  Between the crosses, row on row,
  That mark our place; and in the sky
  The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
  Scarce heard amid the guns below.”

• Poppy Day and Remembrance: Following the poem’s publication, the poppy became a symbol of remembrance for those who died in WWI and subsequent wars. The Royal British Legion began selling artificial poppies in 1921 to raise funds for veterans and their families. Poppy Day (now Remembrance Day) is observed on November 11th, marking the end of WWI, and in many countries, people wear poppies as a way to honor fallen soldiers.

Poppies have been associated with Sleep and Death.

The opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) contains alkaloids such as morphine, which were known for their pain-relieving and sedative properties. The poppy’s connection to sleep and death, rooted in both mythology and pharmacology.

The opium poppy, scientifically known as Papaver somniferum, is the primary source of opium. This plant produces a milky latex that contains several alkaloids, including morphine and codeine, which are potent narcotics.

Other Symbolic Meanings:

• “Peace” and Tranquility: In some cultures, the poppy is a symbol of peace, sleep, and calm (as in those Keep Calm posters a few years ago). It was a symbol of endurance, it thrived in hostile and disturbed environments (like battlefields or wastelands), it grows from the scars of destruction.

Including any chemical, software application, compound that contains genetic information, instructions for synthesis (such as in a Quick Response (QR) Code generator).
