Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces intense backlash following an investigative report alleging he received an explicit warning about an impending Hamas operation 10 days before the October 7, 2023 attacks. The report is based on findings from an upcoming book by journalists Shlomi Eldar and Ruth Yuval.

The explosive allegations were published by the left-leaning Israeli newspaper Haaretz, citing the newly released book Kidnapped: 843 Days of Abandonment by prominent Israeli journalists Shlomi Eldar and Ruth Yuval. According to the report, United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a 45-minute phone call with Netanyahu in late September 2023. Acting on a message originally passed down from Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, the Emirati ruler allegedly warned Netanyahu that Hamas was planning a major operation that would destabilize the region and spark mass bloodshed. 

Netanyahu’s office immediately labeled the story a “malicious fabrication” and false propaganda. His administration released statements clarifying that “no warning was given to the Prime Minister from the United Arab Emirates before October 7″. He has since threatened to sue Haaretz and the journalists behind the book for defamation and election interference. 

Netanyahu has long defended his actions leading up to the tragedy by claiming that while general warnings about regional instability were issued by top security officials, none of them provided a specific timeline or indicated that an attack would originate from Gaza. He also recently asserted that Israeli security chiefs chose not to wake him during the early hours of October 7 because they downplayed the immediate threat

The revelation has drastically intensified political fighting ahead of Israel’s national election. Opposition politicians and political rivals have seized on the Haaretz report to attack the Prime Minister’s credibility. The former top general and current political opponent accused Netanyahu of ignoring dozens of tangible warnings, stating that his leadership has become dangerous to Israel. The leader of the center-left Democrats party stated that Netanyahu’s “they-didn’t-wake-me-up narrative is over”, framing the lapse as “conscious and criminal abandonment”.  The former prime minister claimed Netanyahu bears direct responsibility and “cannot continue to serve in his position for even one more minute”.

While Netanyahu continues to reject calls for an independent state commission of inquiry into the systemic failures of October 7, his primary political opponents have made establishing such a supreme-court-appointed commission their absolute first priority if they win power. Recent polling indicates that the controversy is tightly squeezing Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party, which risks being pushed out of office by the growing opposition bloc.
