Former Maricopa County Recorder: Trump Administration’s Election Involvement Fueling Voter Distrust
A recent poll shows that the majority of Americans fear that November’s midterm elections could be compromised, with 67% worried that political pressure could affect the outcome. Stephen Richer, a legal fellow with the Cato Institute and the former recorder of Maricopa County, released a statement:

“Following the 2024 presidential election, Americans of both political parties reported high levels of confidence in American elections. Since then, the Trump administration has attempted to inject itself into election administration in unprecedented ways: issuing two executive orders, launching criminal investigations of long-past elections, deputizing the USPS for voter eligibility, sending threatening letters from the DHS, data requests from the DOJ, and delivering addresses on election administration from the Oval Office. It’s no wonder that confidence has declined, and worries have increased, over the past year and a half.
“That being said, I am confident in the preparations taken by state and local officials that will allow them to successfully, accurately, fairly, and lawfully administer the upcoming election. So far, primary elections have gone very smoothly.”
