Why you need to be at the Christians for Liberty conference

2014 was the first Christians for Liberty Conference. It was held in Austin, Texas. 2015 and 2016 also saw Austin conferences before LCI went virtual for its 2017 event. I wasn’t involved with LCI then, but later I bought and listened to some of the recordings from those events. It made me wish I had been able to attend!

Since coming on staff at the Libertarian Christian Institute, I’ve represented LCI at FreedomFest twice and at Acton University once. What made those events special to me was not that I got to hear ideas that I was already having delivered to my Kindle and podcast feed. It was getting to spend time in person with that strange and dispersed tribe of individuals called Christian libertarians. It was getting to meet people in person that I had only ever talked to online. It was the excitement of seeing physical evidence that there are other people who care about these issues as much as I do.

That’s why I pushed for LCI to organize another conference. This time around we have a larger staff and multiple podcasts, and I wanted each active show to be represented on the stage. This was partly because I think each of us has something valuable to add to the conversation about faith and freedom, but also partly because I wanted our supporters to get to meet my colleagues in person and renew their excitement for the cause which LCI works so hard to promote. This will also be the first time that I myself will have the privilege of meeting two of my fellow Christians for Liberty Network hosts in person—Gregory Baus and Jacob Winograd.

But I didn’t just want to make it a family reunion. I also wanted to invite other guests who are doing incredible work in the liberty movement. We were able to add Jim Babka, the host of Gracearchy and an important figure in the Libertarian Party from way back. We also got Randy England, an eloquent and well-read thinker and writer who is ably making the Catholic case for liberty. Some may have first heard of Spike Cohen when he ran for vice president in 2020 on the LP ticket, but his activist work for You Are the Power has not only been highly effective, but inspirational in its commitment to the Christian principle of enemy love that’s often missing from our politics. Jeremy Todd is running for Thomas Massie’s house seat in KY-04, and he may have an advantage that many other Libertarian Party candidates haven’t had—an electorate that saw one of the best congressmen of our time get booted for daring to advocate for fiscal responsibility, and for advocating for the victims of powerful men. As a result, those voters are mad as hell. Last but not least, there’s Doug Bandow. Doug is an expert in foreign policy and civil liberties who’s done great work at the Cato Institute. Not only did we invite these titans of liberty to our Cincinnati conference, but they accepted! I can’t wait for our attendees to get to hear them and meet them in person.
