Tesla Giga Berlin’s treehouse protesters were asked to vacate the premises after an old World War II (WWII) bomb was found around the area. Authorities plan to detonate the WWII bomb where it landed near Tesla Giga Berlin.
The World War II bomb weighs 250 kilograms and was found near Tesla’s gigafactory in Germany. According to the municipal administration, the WWII bomb could not be transported out of the area. Authorities are implementing heavy restrictions around the area due to the expected detonation of the bomb.
Authorities plan to detonate the WWII bomb on Wednesday. They will prepare for the controlled explosion at 6 a.m. Part of the preparations include closing state roads 23 and 38. Authorities will also temporarily halt work at the Fangschleuse train station. If the detonation goes smoothly, authorities believe all restrictions to the area may be lifted by 3 p.m. in the afternoon.
Thus far, Tesla Giga Berlin will be allowed to continue operations. However, the factory’s treehouse protestors have set up a forest camp near the WWII bomb and have been asked to leave the area. The police are actively communicating with the protesters. Local media reports state that some officers have threatened to evict the treehouse protesters, hinting that some have refused to vacate the area.
Tesla Giga Berlin’s treehouse protestors are fighting against the factory’s expansion. Tesla’s expansion plans for Giga Berlin are expected to increase its annual production capacity from 500,000 electric vehicles (EVs) to 1,000,000 units. However, Tesla will need to cut down more trees near the factory site to expand Giga Berlin.
The treehouse protesters set up camp in the forest near Giga Berlin, effectively preventing construction work or preparations near the site. The local police have filed at least two complaints against the protesters. In May, the treehouse protesters were permitted to stay in their camps by the Berlin-Brandenburg Higher Administrative Court.
