Mercedes-Benz draws ire from EV fire victims in South Korea

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Mercedes-Benz has drawn the ire of the electric vehicle (EV) fire victims in South Korea for providing an “absurdly insufficient” donation to the residents of the complex affected by the blaze.

Recently, an electric Mercedes-Benz caught on fire in an underground parking lot of an apartment complex in Incheon. The blaze dealt severe damage to over 100 vehicles in the parking garage. A local media report also noted that a few residents sustained minor injuries from the fire.

The fire caused by the Mercedez-Benz EV took several hours to put out, causing extensive damage and concerns. The South Korean Environment Ministry called an emergency meeting to discuss EV fire safety. The South Korean government is thinking of requiring automakers to disclose their EV battery brands. So far, Hyundai and Kia have released a list of EV battery brands they use to the public.

Mercedes-Benz Korea offered to donate 4.5 billion won ($3.3 million) to the victims of the apartment complex to support them during recovery. However, many residents argue that the legacy automaker’s donation is insufficient.

The CEO and President of Mercedes-Benz Korea, Mathias Vaitl, attended a meeting with the apartment complex’s residents affected by the fire. Vaitl arrived at the meeting late, drawing the residents’ ire. Many residents expressed their anger and frustration about the incident during the meeting.

“We have 1,581 household units in our apartment complex. If you do the calculation, each household on average is subject to about 3 million won each from the relief support by Mercedes-Benz,” said one resident.

According to Yonhap News Agency, the residents of the apartment building presented their arguments to Vaitl. One of the residents pointed out that a single Mercedes-Benz EV damaged the livelihoods of 1,581 households. Another person living in the complex stated that the residents have different insurance plans, and a few would only be able to receive a partial reimbursement for their damaged vehicles.

A few more residents addressed the health concerns they have been facing. Some brought up concerns over secondary effects from the dust caused by the fire. Others mentioned residents suffering from headaches and children experiencing sore throats.
