T-Mobile sends first ever wireless emergency alert using Starlink

T-Mobile has announced that it was able to successfully send and receive a wireless emergency alert (WEA) via Starlink satellite. The technology is expected to enter a beta test period before it is launched commercially. 

T-Mobile noted that it conducted a test alert for a hypothetical evacuation notice. The alert was sent 217 miles into space, where it was received by one of Starlink’s 175 direct-to-smartphone satellites that are currently in orbit. The notification was then broadcast to a geographic area that was affected by the hypothetical evacuation notice and received by a T-Mobile smartphone.

As noted by T-Mobile in a press release, the whole process was extremely quick. It took emergency operators just seconds to queue up an emergency message via Starlink and deliver the alert to users on the ground. T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert noted that the test highlighted just how far communications technology has progressed. 

“This is one of those days, as the CEO of a wireless company, that makes me pause for a moment and reflect on how technology advancements and the work we’re doing is truly impacting life and death situations,” Sievert said. 

The importance of satellite-enabled wireless emergency alerts (WEA) are substantial. During the 2018 Camp Fire in California alone, thousands of people who were affected by the blaze found it very difficult to communicate with loved ones and emergency personnel because the fire destroyed cell towers. Had satellite-enabled wireless emergency alerts been used at the time, the blaze would likely have compromised fewer people. 

Starlink currently has over 175 direct-to-smartphone satellites currently in low-earth orbit, though more are expected to be launched in the coming months. Overall, T-Mobile noted that its successful test “opens up the 500,000 square miles of lightly populated, mountainous and/or uninhabitable land across the country to critical, life-saving emergency alerts.”
