Hello,

I am writing to you from Yale Law School on behalf of a professor who would like to pay an independent researcher for a small but time-sensitive project.

We need three publication quality images from the National Archives (details on the project below).

The records are in the Judge Advocate General collection.  The record information I have is as follows: National Archives and Records Administration, Record Group 153, Papers of Brigadier General G. Norman Lieber, NM33 A, Entry 12A, Box 2, Folder 5.

Would you be able to get us these images? Our professor is working to a fairly tight publication deadline and requires them by the first week of June. We are willing and able to pay you for your time and efforts. Please reach out to me directly if you’re interested.

Thank you!

Lora Johns

Details on the project from the Professor:

Hello John Nann!

You’ll recall that one of the many (too many!) projects you’ve been helping me with over the past couple of years is a project involving a manuscript on martial law in the National Archives.  My co-author (Will Smiley, cc’d here) and I are nearing the end. The project is bring published as a volume by Yale Press, which is great news.  We’re trying to make a tight deadline for their spring 2019 catalog.

Which brings me to you: There are three pages from the manuscript that we’d like to reproduce with Yale Press in the book.  We have the images we used for the transcriptions, but we don’t have high-res, publication-quality images.

Can you help us identify a NARA researcher who would go and shoot three publication quality images?

The records are in the Judge Advocate General collection.  The record information I have is as follows:  National Archives and Records Administration, Record Group 153, Papers of Brigadier General G. Norman Lieber, NM33 A, Entry 12A, Box 2, Folder 5

The three pages for which we need better images are attached here.   The manuscript is in a manila folder and the handwritten martial law manuscript is inside it. Note that inside the folder, the manuscript chapters are out of order: they go VII-VI-I-II-III-V.

·         First page of chapter 1

·         Page from chapter 8

·         First page of an appendix that consists of printed pages of a document called “Instructions for the Government of the Armies of the United States in the Field” with handwritten annotations

Is this enough information?  You had a researcher named Sam Miner working on this once before, in case that’s useful.
