Dry high pressure gradually builds in from the north through Thursday, pushing a stalled front further south of the area. The high will drift east off the East Coast Friday, as a cold front approaches from the west over the weekend. The front will bring a return of better chances of showers and thunderstorms.

Hazards

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected across the region today, dissipating and exiting the area to the southeast this evening. The main threat will be locally heavy rainfall where multiple showers and storms pass over the same areas. A few strong storms producing gusty winds and frequent lightning will also be possible, mainly across the South Carolina Piedmont and Charlotte area.

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical Storm Ernesto, located about a hundred miles east of the Leeward Islands.

Tropical cyclone formation is not expected over the next 7 days.
