One of the most wonderful benefits of fulfilled prophecy, over against the speculations of self-appointed prophetic speculators, is that fulfilled prophecy can be used to support the Bible’s own claim that it is indeed the very Word of God. For example, the crucifixion of Jesus was outlined in remarkable detail centuries before Roman soldiers pierced Jesus’ hands and feet and divided His garments among them (Psalm 22:11-18) on that horrible day at Golgotha. Isaiah 53 reads like an eyewitness account of the crucifixion. But Isaiah was not an eyewitness. He wrote centuries before Jesus lived and died.

The faith of Christians is strengthened when they read what was predicted in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament pertaining to the coming Messiah. “Canon Liddon is authority for the statement that there are in the Old Testament 332 distinct predictions which were literally fulfilled in Christ,”[1] all demonstrating the veracity of the Bible’s assertion that “all Scripture is God-breathed” (2 Tim. 3:16, NIV).

The New Testament continues with its own prophetic pronouncements fulfilled with equal precision. While there are many who believe that much from the New Testament is yet to be fulfilled, many fine scholars have taught that much has been fulfilled.
