Germany: Updated Charges for Accused Bielefeld Stabber
Last month, a suspect identified only as Mahmoud M., a Syrian “refugee”, went on a stabbing spree outside a bar in Bielefeld, Germany, leaving 4 victims seriously injured. He was arrested the next evening near Dusseldorf.
Now, additional charges have been filed against the suspect based on information that he joined ISIS in Syria no later than December 2014 and that the stabbing attack was a religiously motivated crime against the free and democratic basic law in Germany.

Federal Prosecutor’s Office
New arrest warrant after knife attack in Bielefeld
June 25, 2025 at 16:57
After the knife attack on patrons at a bar last month in Bielefeld, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office has obtained a new arrest warrant against the alleged perpetrator. The Syrian reportedly joined the ISIS terror organization before the act.
In the case of the alleged attack in front of a bar in Bielefeld, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office has obtained a new arrest warrant against the suspected Syrian. Mahmoud M. is accused of membership in a foreign terrorist organization, attempted murder, and dangerous bodily injury, the Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Karlsruhe announced.
According to recent findings, the suspect may have joined the terror organization, “Islamic State” even before the crime. M. reportedly joined ISIS no later than December 2014 in Syria. Up until spring 2016, he allegedly worked for the organization as a border guard.
After his entry into Germany, M. decided, in the name of a so-called holy war, to kill as many people for ISIS as possible, who would be randomly chosen. The investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice ordered his continued (pre-trial) detention.
Knife attack on football (soccer) fans
On May 18, M. allegedly deliberately stabbed patrons at a bar who were celebrating their football team’s promotion there. Four people were critically injured. According to earlier reports, the victims defended themselves by hitting the attacker and injuring him in the process.
After the crime, M. fled and was arrested near Dusseldorf late in the evening of the next day. He was already in pre-trial custody based on the arrest warrant of the District Court in Bielefeld.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office took over the investigation on May 20 due to the suspicion that the crime was a religiously motivated attack on the free and democratic basic law.
Temporary residence status
The Syrian has a temporary residence status. He was living in an accommodation in Harsewinkel in Guetersloh District. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees granted him residence status with subsidized protection in December 2023, according to reports from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Government.
Accordingly, he received a temporary residence permit from the immigration authorities in Guetersloh District (valid) to February 2027. According to the latest investigation, the man traveled to Europe via Turkey.
