On September 7, in the German city of Magdeburg, a 59-year-old Syrian woman was chased down on the street and stabbed to death by a knife-wielding man. A woman (59) was being chased shortly after noon by a knife-wielding attacker down the street. Witnesses heard screams. The victim apparently escaped through the entrance to an office building, which also houses a fitness studio. But the perpetrator follows her into the stairwell and repeatedly stabs her there.

Perpetrator injures himself

Police spokesman Stefan Brodtrueck: “Despite immediate rescue measures initiated, the victim died at the scene.” Paramedics and emergency doctors also had to care for the attacker. “The suspect was found at the scene with serious injuries by police officers who had been called, and he was provisionally arrested.

According to BILD‘s information, the suspect reportedly inflicted the injuries upon himself. Both the perpetrator and the victim are Syrian citizens who were living in the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt.

The stabber was taken to the Magdeburg City Clinic under police guard. As the doctors there work to save his life, Magdeburg police officers closed off the area around Lubecker Street and Fabriken Street.

In addition to dog handlers, the  State Police crime scene group, stationed only a few hundred meters away, was deployed. Police spokesman Brodtrueck confirms:  “A police helicopter was also temporarily deployed.”

Victim was ex-girlfriend

The investigation at the scene of the crime lasted into the evening hours. In addition to securing evidence, Squad II ( murder, sexual crimes) investigators are looking into possible perpetrator-victim relations and trying to explain the motive for the act. On Sunday, a police spokesperson said: “The reasons for the act are still not clear.”

Then on Monday, came the investigative update from the police: The woman and the Syrian (57) were earlier reportedly a couple. The circumstances of the act, however, remain unclear. Witnesses confirm, however, that the man inflicted the injuries himself with a stabbing instrument.

The investigation against the 57-year-old will be carried out under the charge of manslaughter. The State Prosecutor’s Office in Magdeburg expects the preliminary autopsy results on Monday.
