Border Patrol agents coming to Charlotte after days of speculation

Border Patrol personnel will be coming to the Charlotte area as soon as this weekend, the Mecklenburg County sheriff confirmed on Thursday.

Federal officials contacted Sheriff Garry McFadden on Wednesday, Nov. 12 to make him aware.

The sheriff’s office said members of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection — which includes Border Patrol — were expected to move into the Charlotte region by Saturday or the early part of next week.

Confirmation that Border Patrol will come into the area comes days after CBS reported that the federal agency could target Charlotte as it prepared to lessen its presence in Chicago. (snip)

While officials confirmed to the sheriff that Border Patrol was coming, the sheriff’s office said “specific details regarding the federal operation have not been disclosed.” The sheriff’s office also said it had not been asked to help with any enforcement actions.

North Carolina law bans counties and cities from being illegal alien sanctuaries, but, really, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County (and several other cities and counties in NC) do what they can to restrict cooperation. Sheriff McFadden has said Mecklenburg is not a sanctuary county, so, we’ll see what shakes out.

Excitable Governor Josh Stein is throwing some shade, a little fearmongering

(MyFox8) Gov. Josh Stein told Queen City News on Wednesday that if agents do land in Charlotte, he does not want to see a recreation of scenes that have played out in Chicago. 

“We’ve seen them assault senior people,” Stein said from an economic development announcement. “We’ve seen them go after people who were peacefully protesting, this is not how policing is supposed to happen in this country.”

Bullshit. Throwing things at ICE and CBP agents, obstructing, harassing, running into their cars, and more. That’s not peaceful. Get in the way of lawful arrests and expect Bad Things to happen.

The governor added that he’s not necessarily against immigration law being enforced but said there must be a limit on what agents can do.

“If we had absolute confidence that ICE was going to come here and they were going to go and find violent, dangerous drug traffickers and criminals and be targeted in their work, the city would welcome them with open arms, I’m almost certain of that,” he said. “We haven’t heard from them, so we don’t know what their plans are.”

Limits? If they are in the U.S. illegally that is the limit.
