Robert Barron, Bishop of the Diocese of Winona-Rochester in Minnesota, knows what Zohran Mamdani has in mind when he shouts that he wants to snuff out the rugged individualism that characterizes America in favor of the “warmth of collectivism.”
As Bishop Barron reminds us:
“Collectivism in its various forms is responsible for the deaths of at least one hundred million people in the last century.”
This figure refers to people killed by their own Marxist governments during the 20th century, as documented in the highly recommended Black Book of Communism.
“For God’s sake, spare me the ‘warmth of collectivism.’”
The commandments “Thou shalt not covet … anything that is thy neighbor’s” and “Thou shalt not steal” offer clues to the Christian perspective.
“Catholic social teaching has consistently condemned socialism and has embraced the market economy, which people like Mayor Mamdani caricature as “rugged individualism.” In fact, it is the economic system that is based upon the rights, freedom, and dignity of the human person.”
Freedom and dignity are anathema to leftists. They do like rights though, so long as by “rights” you mean special privileges for groups that help them secure power.
