Supreme Court Allows California to Use Congressional Map Benefitting Democrats
The Supreme Court has cleared the way for California to implement a new congressional map engineered to hand Democrats five additional House seats, rejecting a Republican request to keep the existing map in place while legal challenges proceed. In a terse, one-sentence order — with no public dissents — the justices effectively sanctioned blatant partisan gerrymandering, mirroring a decision just two months earlier allowing Texas to do the same. California’s map, approved via a rushed ballot initiative, was found by lower courts to be driven overwhelmingly by partisan advantage, not race — a conclusion the Supreme Court allowed to stand. The result is a naked arms race in redistricting: when one party gerrymanders, the other retaliates, and the Court stands aside. Representation takes a back seat; power politics wins.
Meanwhile, Indiana Republicans killed a proposed congressional map designed to strengthen Republican seats.
