New Jersey Democratic Congressional Candidate Testified on Behalf of the ‘Blind Sheikh’

A New Jersey plastic surgeon who is leading the money race in a crowded Democratic congressional primary was, as it turns out, an associate of the notorious terrorist mastermind Sheikh Omar Abdel-Rahman, better known as the “Blind Sheikh.”

Adam Hamaway, who has Ilhan Omar’s endorsement to represent New Jersey’s 12th district, was a 26-year-old medical student in 1995 when Abdel-Rahman’s lawyers put him on the stand to deny charges that the Blind Sheikh—whose followers carried out the 1993 World Trade Center bombing—had called for the murder of then-Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak. The New York Times reported on Hamawy’s testimony at the time, but dozens of pages of testimony reviewed by the Free Beacon reveal a far deeper relationship between the congressional candidate and the Blind Sheikh than was previously known.

Hamawy met the Blind Sheikh at a lecture at a middle school in New Jersey and followed him to speaking events, visiting his home and providing him with translation help. During his testimony, he described a 13-hour car journey with Abdel-Rahman and his associates to attend a Detroit conference called “Towards a Global Islamic Economy.” Hamawy testified that he never heard the Blind Sheikh calling for Mubarak’s murder, though he did say he heard the word “jihad” more than once and acknowledged that the conference “wasn’t a commerce thing” but more about “conquering the land of the infidels.” Abdel-Rahman was ultimately convicted of seditious conspiracy, solicitation to murder Mubarak, conspiracy to murder Mubarak, solicitation to attack a U.S. military installation, and conspiracy to conduct bombings. He died in a North Carolina federal prison in 2017.

“Hamawy is 1 of 13 candidates in the race to succeed retiring Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D.) in the deep-blue district,” our Jon Levine writes. “He has a significant fundraising lead over his opponents, totaling more than $540,000 in donations to his closest competitor’s $400,000. In addition to Omar, Hamawy has received the backing of anti-Israel organizations like American Priorities—a new super PAC funded in large part by donors to Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s (D., N.Y.) mayoral campaign—and Track AIPAC, which accuses pro-Israel politicians in the United States of being ‘foreign agents.’ The political arm of the Council on American-Islamic Relations—whose leader, Nihad Awad, said he was ‘happy to see’ Oct. 7—endorsed Hamawy in March.”

He’s running on cutting the Pentagon budget, abolishing and prosecuting ICE, closing the “racial wealth gap”—and LGBTQ+ equality, something we didn’t realize was a priority in the Muslim world.
