It’s amusing, but Newsweek explains the elections in Colombia this way:
Colombia’s pro-Donald Trump candidate Abelardo de la Espriella won the first round of the country’s presidential election on Sunday and will now face left-leaning senator Iván Cepeda in a runoff later this month.
De la Espriella, a political outsider, won nearly 44 percent of the vote while Cepeda clinched just under 41 percent, according to Colombian media.
Everything is about Trump isn’t it? In fact, it’s a lot more complicated than that.
Yes, Abelardo de la Espriella, or “El Tigre” (Tiger) as they call him, is just one more Colombian fed up with what the narco-left has done to the country. Something similar happened in Ecuador, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Bolivia, and others.
Yes, “El Tigre” is a fan of Trump because he believes in law and order and blowing up narco ships in the ocean. He is a husband, father of four, and understands what is going on in his country. In fact, he is a big fan of President Bukele of El Salvador, who implemented a radical idea—i.e. lock up criminals and take them off the streets. Are you taking notes Chicago?
It’s amazing what is happening in El Salvador. People can walk down the streets again. Business owners are not visited by gang members demanding money for protection. Mothers are not worried about their sons coming home from a party anymore. Every Latin American, from Mexico to Argentina, is seeing El Salvador, and wants leaders who lock up criminals. It’s not left or right or about MAGA. It’s common sense. or the idea that you can live peacefully in your neighborhood.
So “El Tigre” now moves to the second round against Mr. Cepeda, the candidate who represents leftist President Petro. “El Tigre” should win, and Colombia will join the parade of countries tired of the narco-left destroying their societies.
