This is the beast—this 30-year-old Afghan migrant who today, in Brierfield near Burnley, stabbed a 17-year-old British girl in the neck from behind with a knife. The girl is still fighting for her life, lying in critical condition in the hospital.

Man arrested after allegedly stabbing teenage girl in back of neck in Burnley

Armed officers rushed to Wood Street in Brierfield following reports of a knife attack

A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 17-year-old girl was stabbed in Burnley.

The teenager is receiving hospital treatment after suffering a stab wound to the back of her neck in Brierfield, Lancashire, on Friday afternoon.

Lancashire Police were called to Wood Street at 3.06pm following reports of an assault.

Armed officers were dispatched to the scene in the town near Nelson, where a 30-year-old man was arrested shortly after their arrival.

Witnesses reported a significant police presence in the area throughout the afternoon.

A Lancashire Police spokesman said: “We were called at 3.06pm today to Wood Street, Brierfield, to a report of stabbing.

“It was reported that a 17-year-old girl had been assaulted and suffered a stab injury to her neck.

“Officers, some of them armed, attended and a 30-year-old man was arrested shortly afterwards on suspicion of attempted murder.”

The force said additional patrols would remain in the area to reassure residents.

They added: “We know that this will cause alarm in the local community and extra patrols will be in the area this evening to provide reassurance.”

Detectives have appealed for witnesses and anyone with CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage to come forward.

Enquiries remain ongoing.

The incident comes just days after a Manchester school was put into lockdown following a suspected stabbing by a student.

Three people were injured in the suspected attack – a 14-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and a 27-year-old member of staff.

All three were taken to hospital, although police said their injuries are not believed to be serious.

A pupil at Co-op Academy on Plant Hill Road in Blackley was later arrested by Greater Manchester Police.

Counter-terrorism officers are leading the investigation, although police have not ruled out any motive and the incident has not yet been declared a terror attack.
