Manhunt after driver ploughs into crowd during Pride parade in Germany’s capital Berlin – with at least one person killed and multiple injuries

A driver has ploughed into a crowd of people in a ‘brutal attack’ near Berlin’s Pride celebrations on Saturday evening, leaving several people injured and one dead.

The incident happened just hours after the city’s annual Christopher Street Day (CSD) pride event began, prompting police to call off the event in the German capital.

Berlin Police said they, alongside emergency services, were responding to the incident where a van charged through the city’s central Tiergarten Park, near the Brandenburg Gate.

At least 17 people have been injured in the crash, German police said, and it has been reported the person killed was a woman.

At least three people have sustained life-threatening injuries, while eight have been left seriously injured.

Police spokesperson Alexander Klute said: ‘At this point, we don’t know anything about any possible motives, the identity of the perpetrator or the perpetrators, or anything of that nature.’

The Mayor of Berlin, Kai Wegner, said in a post on X that a ‘gathering for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin has been most brutally attacked’.

He added: ‘After a peaceful and colourful CSD, the assembly for a tolerant and peaceful Berlin was attacked in the most brutal way,’ he wrote.

A manhunt has since been launched and investigators have identified a suspected perpetrator and initiated initial measures against him, according to Bild.

He is reportedly known to be a member of Islamist circles, the German publication added. It is not yet clear if there is one or several suspects.
