Extravagantly Expensive New York Public Schools Fail
The saying “You get what you pay for” only applies under capitalism. Where government provides the goods and services, you pay what the government says you have to and get what the government decides to give. Consider public schools in New York.
The New York Post reports:
Preliminary results released this week by the state Education Department [reveal] that 57% of 3rd graders, 52% of 4th graders and 57% of 5th graders failed to make the grade on their 2025-26 English Language Arts tests. …
Overall, just 48% of students in the testing grades, 4th-8th, rated proficient on the ELA — a “significant” 5% plunge from the previous year, the department said.
Pulling the rest of the state down the drain is New York City, which enrolls 40% of the state’s public school students:
Big Apple 3rd graders were the poorest performers on the ELA, with scores for that age group plummeting 13.8% from the previous year as only about 44% ranked proficient. Fifth graders followed behind with a 13.1% drop, according to the data.
Meanwhile, the state spends a staggering $37,000 per student. In NYC, it is $44,000 per student.
For the money, taxpayers are getting a generation of students who can barely read, write, or do math. But at least they know all about the evils of the white man and how generating energy imperils the climate.
