Hiking the Catskills - Sugarloaf Mountain Loop
This roughly 7-mile loop offers a challenging but rewarding hike with steep climbs, rocky scrambles, and several scenic viewpoints. The route begins and ends at the Roaring Kill Trailhead in Elka Park and combines sections of the Mink Hollow Trail, Devil’s Path, and Pecoy Notch Trail.
Sugarloaf Mountain Trail Description:
Start at the Roaring Kill Trailhead on Roaring Kill Road. The trail begins gently, following a short quarter-mile stretch to a junction where the Pecoy Notch and Mink Hollow Trails meet. Turn right onto the Mink Hollow Trail and follow it for approximately 2.5 miles.
The Mink Hollow Trail ascends the shoulder of Sugarloaf Mountain, passing several old quarries near the height of land. From here, the trail contours relatively flat along Mink Hollow, offering a nice viewpoint of Mink Hollow and Plateau Mountain. After this, the trail descends steeply before climbing gently toward a creek crossing, which can be difficult during high water.
Beyond the creek, the trail climbs more steeply until it meets the Devil’s Path in Mink Hollow.
Once on the Devil’s Path, expect a steep, rocky, and strenuous section characterized by ledges and scrambles. This section demands good fitness but rewards hikers with exceptional scenery. The trail climbs through rock ledges until reaching the 3,500-foot elevation marker, after which the grade eases as you near the summit.
Just before the summit, a short yellow-blazed side trail leads to a beautiful viewpoint—worth the detour. Return to the Devil’s Path and turn right to continue to Sugarloaf’s wooded summit.
After the summit, continue east along the Devil’s Path. Stop at the western ledges for excellent views of Twin Mountain and the surrounding valleys.
The descent into Pecoy Notch is steep and rugged; proceed carefully. At the Pecoy Notch Trail junction, turn left to head back toward the Roaring Kill Trailhead. This section is more moderate and features highlights such as a beaver pond and Dibble’s Quarry.
About a mile from Pecoy Notch, reach Dibble’s Quarry, notable for its stone structures and excellent views of Kaaterskill High Peak, Roundtop, and Platte Clove Valley. Take a moment to enjoy the scenery before completing the final 1 mile back to your car.
