On September 24, 1972, a horrible incident happened here in Sacramento. An incident in which 22 people died and 28 people were injured. Pilot Richard L. Bingham was flying a Canadair Sabre MK 5 Fighter Jet from Sacramento Executive Airport. Bingham was unable to reach a suitable altitude. The pilot only had 4 hours flying time on this Canadair Sabre Fighter Jet. Not enough time, to master the aircraft. Bingham lost control of this jet, and it skidded across Freeport Blvd and smashed into Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor killing 22 people. The jet was going 150 mph as it smashed into the parlor. Bingham was injured from this crash and survived. When the investigation of this crash was conducted, the conclusion was that it was “pilot error”. Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor is no longer located at this site and a memorial was placed, honoring the deceased. The location of this tragedy is at the Freeport Square Shopping Center at 5770 Freeport Blvd.

Paranormal Hotline Call: 10/12/2024. Time: 9:02 a.m. Caller: Ms. C. Ms. C wishes to remain anonymous. Ms. C says that she is a survivor of this tragedy, she was at the location of this incident in 1972. Ms. C says that before the incident, she had a very strange experience. On 3 different nights, she would hear the sound of an airplane. The sound was loud and on the 3rd night, she stepped outside to see where the noise was coming from. When she opened her front door, the sound of a plane stopped. Ms. C thought that these strange plane sounds might be a warning of some sort and that perhaps she is being warned that a plane will crash into her home. Ms. C felt more comfortable going out and staying out for a while, so she wouldn’t be haunted by the strange plane noises at her home. Then it happened. Ms. C was coming out of Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor and the plane crash disaster happened. I asked Ms. C if she thought she was psychic and Ms. C says that she believes she has some kind of psychic abilities.

Ms. C tells me that a couple weeks ago, she went to Freeport Square Shopping Center at 5770 Freeport Blvd, to pay her respects. While she was in deep prayer for the victims, she saw 4 fast moving human shaped shadows moving across the wall. Ms. C feels the shopping center is haunted. I must agree with Ms. C, a tragic event like this may have an everlasting residual effect on the site of this horrific tragedy. The events of September 24, 1972, will replay over and over again. In 1998, when I was taking lessons on flying a helicopter and Cessna airplane at the Sacramento Executive Airport, I would sometimes stop off at Freeport Square Shopping Center. There were times on a hot summer day, I would feel cold spots here and there, which I found unusual. In 1998, I was not a paranormal investigator yet. Even though I was not a paranormal investigator, I knew that the cold spots were a bit unsettling. 10/14/2024: Today, Wish Fire and I, stopped by the Freeport Square Shopping Center. I did several EVP sessions and obtained one possible EVP of heavy breathing (like if someone was running). Wish Fire, Psychic Medium detected spirit activity at the shopping center. Wish Fire felt heavy anxiety and fear as she walked in one area of the Center. My EMF reader went off in certain areas of the location. I did not get any anomalies in my photographs. After my investigation, my conclusion was that there is a very dark imprint in the atmosphere and the residual haunting of the shopping center will most likely continue forever.

FROM WIKIPEDIA:
The aircraft overran the runway, struck an earthen berm, and ripped through a chain link fence. Two external underwing fuel tanks ruptured and ignited upon impact with the fence, creating a massive fireball. The plane continued across Freeport Boulevard, crashing into a moving car, and struck a Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor at around 150 miles per hour. Occupants of the parlor included the Sacramento 49ers junior football team. 22 people on the ground died, including 12 children. An eight-year-old survivor of the accident lost nine family members: both parents, two brothers, a sister, two grandparents and two cousins. A family of four also died in the accident. Two people were killed in the car struck on Freeport Boulevard. Immediately after the crash an elderly couple trying to cross the street to the crash site were struck by a vehicle, killing the wife. Had either the external fuel tanks not ruptured prior to impact or the aircraft not been slowed by hitting the moving car and other vehicles parked in front of the restaurant, the accident could have claimed many more lives. Bingham, the pilot, suffered a broken leg and a broken arm.
