Monaco is known as the Principality of Monaco, because it is a sovereign city/state. It is a microstate that is located on the French Riviera bordering the Italian region of Liguria, with France to the north, east and west. Monaco is populated with 38,682 residents, in which 9,486 are Monegasque nationals. Monaco is one of the wealthiest places in the world.
A bit of history of Monaco. The name Monaco comes from the 6th century BC Phocaean Greek colony. The Ligurians referred Monaco as “Monoikos”. Legend has it that Hercules came to Monaco and turned away the previous Gods. They built the House of Hercules in Monaco. House of Hercules was taken by the Holy Roman Empire and passed on to the Genoese bloodline. If you visit Monaco now, it’s like paradise. Beautiful rich people driving around in their fancy sports cars. red carpets thrown out for the elite. It wasn’t always that way. There have been conflicts in the region. The Genoese Forces had conflicts when occupying Monaco. In 1419 the Grimaldi family purchased Monaco and had conflicts with outside sources. In 1793 Revolutionary forces captured Monaco until 1814. In 1943 the Italian Army invaded Monaco and pushed their fascist administration on the people of Monaco. With the conflicts, skirmishes and invasions, there has been blood spilled on this land.
Let’s look at some of the haunting activity in Monaco. If you are a rich ghost hunter and have money to spend, Monaco might be a great place to do some ghost hunting. I guess you can blame Princess Grace Kelly for transforming this resort into a luxurious celebrity hang-out. Grace Kelly when she married Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 placed this beautiful land on the map. The paparazzi invaded Monaco and millions of pictures were taken of Grace Kelly with her husband Prince Ranier. Before you knew it, the world had their eyes on the lives of Grace and Ranier in Monaco. Everyone in the world knew about the small micro-nation of Monaco. People may know about the rich celebrities that hang-out in Monaco, but do they know about the ghosts of Monaco? Probably not. Let’s look at some of the haunting features of Monaco.
The USS Zaca, a yacht that once belonged to Errol Flynn, is said to be haunted and berthed in Monaco. Some witnesses have reported seeing Flynn’s ghost pacing the ship, while others have heard voices and laughter as if there were a wild party on board. I believe there is a lot of strong positive energy surrounding this boat, which causes a residual effect in which people can hear ghostly laughter. Along the shoreline, Monegasque nationals claim that they have seen mermaids along the shoreline. Some mermaids are said to be hideous in appearance, while some mermaids look like beautiful females with the tail of a fish. A mermaid sang a soft song and a local walked up to the mermaid. The mermaid grabbed the local’s arm and tried to pull him into the Mediterranean Sea. The local said the mermaid was rough with him and had incredible strength. The local believed that the mermaid was trying to drown him.
At the Grand Theater you have the Grand Theatre Opera Singer (ghost). This ghost is of a woman singing her highest pitched notes in the opera house. You can hear her singing, but as a ghost, you can’t see her. If you want to hear more singing, the ghost of Princess Grace can be heard singing in the nearby gardens and also at the Cathedral where she was married at. If you are brave enough, you can check in at the Hotel de Paris and encounter the ghost known as Crazy Heloise. Crazy Heloise is heard laughing hysterically. When Crazy Heloise was alive in Monaco, she was elderly, perhaps in her 70s. She went gambling at the Casino de Monte-Carlo. She won a large amount of money and when she got to her room, she went crazy with laughter, counting her winnings out loud. To this present day, you can still hear her laughing hysterically and counting her winnings. One guest of the hotel encountered Crazy Heloise and he said that she walked through a door and into the hallway carrying all kinds of money. She looked at the guest with a crazed look on her face. The story goes, that she died of a heart attack, that was initiated by her hysterical laughter. She died in her hotel room.
The Public Force aka La Force Publique is the police force for Monaco and two of their officers responded to a disturbance in front of the hotel. When they got there, it was the ghost of a 1943 Italian Army Officer beating a local with a stick over and over again. The officers shined a light on the subject. The subject looked at the officers and vanished in front of their eyes. Also vanishing was the victim that was being beaten with a stick. Also, at this casino is the ghost of the Red Lady. She is described as being in her 40s wearing a long elegant scarlet dress. She is very attractive and will flirt with men, by pouting her lips. When the guy goes to touch her, she will just fade away into nothingness. As an added note, this casino was the inspiration for Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale.
